This AND That
I understand I have been some what slacking with this blog lately, so I am gonna try my upmost to get back on the workrate. So here’s some new (ish) videos for you:
Revolver – Grimes Son – The Review
Welcome to the review for Edmonton based MC, “Revolver”s first release, “Grimes Son”. For those newer or slightly less obsessively educated Grime fans, Revolver came from a crew called Militant Terrorists. Most fans would probably recognize the name from Logan Sama’s 2006 War Report, a compilation of diss/war tunes in which Revolver made a tune addressing East London grime-pioneer Wiley, after Wiley made some comments about the crew which Revolver now bars with (Cold Blooded) and fellow crew member Scorcher. More recently, Revolver has been heard on The Grime digital podcast (see: www.grimeforum.com) with fellow crew members Jonson, Terminator, & Dolla Da Dustman.
But that’s the history lesson over. Now we come to the actual product, the reason behind this slightly longer than usual article. *PLEASE NOTE* THIS IS A TRACK-BY-TRACK REVIEW SO SCROLL DOWN WITH YOUR MOUSE TO READ A SUMMARY* *
1. Exposure
Prod. By Z Dot
Notable Quotations: None.
Really just an into track bigging up the people involved in making the CD. With the occasional “Grimes Son” thrown into the catchy Z Dot production. To be fair however, I’m unable to rate this one.
2. You Don’t Know What Hard Is
Prod. By Z Dot
Notable Quotations: This MC thinks he’s hard ‘cos he’s bar is/Ill just show him I’m a scar kid.
The catchy flow and the even more likeable prodcution make this tune an instant hit amongst real grime fans, much like myself. The gritty production from Z Dot almost temporarilary distracts me from a sharply executed flow, with exciting lines to accompany it. Overall 9.10.
3. Bully
Prod. By P Jam
Noteable Quotations: “I’m a nightmare/bullets will lift you from your nike air”
This tune is special. The production from P Jam is absolutely crazy. The chorus is powerful, as is the song on a whole. I can easily see this coming top on my most played iPod tunes list by next month. Overall 10.10.
4. Lose Your Life
Prod. By Z Dot
Noteable Quotations:
At the moment, any songs that feature productive contibutions from Z Dot or J Beatz are gold to me. With this to be no exception. Nothing to long from Revolver, would’ve sounded better to cut the chorus, Overall 8.10.
5. Respirator
Prod. By Brizzo The Warlord
Noteable Quoteations: “I know your crews Roll Deep/But are you deep though.” // “I heard him say I got holes in my clothes/but my wardobes probably worth half hen your home“
I Havn’t heard much from Brizzo The Warlord before, but what we have in front of us is a nice, production. What comes greater than the prodcution however is the lyrical content put in by Revolver. The 2nd of the quotations I noted above was a send for former Cold Blooded member Cookie. To be fair I think Revolver all but buried him there. I find myself getting stange stares from the people on the bus, as I nod faster and fatser to this one. Overall 7.10.
6. Crews Firing
Prod. By Spyro
Noteable Quoteations: Creating lies/n calling it grime.
A song with strong voclas, slightly ruined by the repetitive ear-drum scratching Spyro prodcution. Dolla provides vocals on this track also, the two together bring something unique and “un-watered down so to speak”, watch out for their joint project coming out soon. Overall 6.10.
7. Brain Freeze
Prod. By Wiley
Noteable Quotations: “We could be on road together/probably go and do a show together“
I cannot help but murmer quitely to myself half way through this song, “Hold on a sec, this is about WIley”. 6 times I replayed it to myself. Like for instance, this is a Wiley production, and the lines I pulled out in the above mentioned plus others including “Flow together” etc etc..maybe hints at the fact he wants to work with Wiley. Possibly I have just taken a good song out of all believble context and try to spice up things in my own fairly simple and imaginable world. Overall 7.10.
8. Fake Friends
Prod. By J Beatz
Noteable Quotations: “If i see your and your crew/thats you n the shells getting married”
As forementioned, J Beatz + MC = Gold. He is one top producer, with this beat no where near an exception ! Consistancy yet to be identified as a problem in this mixtape, this song is catchy. Nay, this song is addictive. Decent flow, but more to the point, superb content. Overall 9.10.
9. The Game
Prod. By Plastic Man
Noteable Quotations: “When the shells hit you in your man u shirt/n you drop n roll in the dirt”
I am slightly dissapointed with this one. I suppose my mind was made up within seconds of the song starting, after hearing some dreadful, head-ache supplying noise. The bars didn’t do much justice either, was almost tempted to press that golden forward button, but, i slumped it out tot he end. Overall 4.10.
10. Controlling The War
Prod. By Rusko
Noteable Quotations: “I’ve been around since BT Cellnet/before Word even had spell check”
Much unlike a few previous tunes, this one shows revolver at the best of his lyrical ability. For the benefit of the listener, the person referred to as “Gary” is the Mc Cookie. Revolver plays on the phrase “Playtimes Over”, a release by his intened target Wiley. This seems to be the strongest attempt to end Wiley by anyone in quite a while. Cookie needs to pack his bag and forget about doind anything musical, I doubt he will ever come back as strong as Revolver was on the tunes made for him (Cookie). Overall 8.10.
11. Escape
Prod. By Blu Beats
Noteable Quotations: N/A
Like the earlier song “The Game” I was dissapointed, the lyrics struck me as random at points, but not to tke nothing away from a well delivered chorus. Overall 6.10.
12. Move Out The Way
Prod. By Shotz
Noteable Quotations: “Suffocate you marjay with a pillow man”
Dolla Da Dustman providing extra and impressive vocals here. He brings, once, again a delivery of almost evil not-for-your-nusery-children style bars, like that one in the Noted quotation above. Revolver too, bringing the same intense no-nonsense approach to an impressive production. Overall 7.10.
13. Battle Scarz
Prod. By Skeamz
Noteable Quotations: PICK ANY LINE FROM THE SONG
The reason I have chosen to write that as the Noted quotation, is because, this is simply one hell of a tune. The production is dark, dirty and evil with the bars not one bit different. One of the best tunes on the CD by a long shot. This one is racking up serious plays on the iPod already. I cannot even begin to describe how this song makes me feel. Overall 9.10.
14. CB’s The Greatest
Prod. By Brizzo The Warlord
Noteable Quotations: “Take the chip off your shoulder/I’m the murderer you just seen in that poster”
Not much to say about this one which I havnt already said. A strong tune though, the levels of consistancy throughout this mixtape are amazing. Overall 7.10.
15. Generals Conquest Remix
Prod. By General Tank
Noteable Quotations:
If one tune could summarise the entire basis and sound of a an entire CD then this is one. A gutter style tune, everyhting about it is dirty, gritty, filthy and sinister. The bars from everyone are down right disgusting, backing up all the content on this CD already. Overall 8.10.
THE SUMMARY
Well, if you have a reliable toilet, then take some over exagerated CD’s released by artists this year, such as Durry Goodz – Ultrasound or Trm’s – Soulfood 4 (Including the equally dissapointing bonus disc) and fluh them away. If not get rid of them using other means, because this CD should be sitting at the top of your pile right now. When talking about levels of consitancy, this CD breaks any pre-judged barriers and smashes every other release so far this year into tiny un-repairable shears of glass. You see, what we have in front of us here, is something so obscene, so profane, that playing in front of your more strict parents would surely earn you a hammer across the face. Please do not feel that the way I compared this CD to various strong like “dirty” words is not because I feel the product is a piece of dirt. But compared to artists who “experiment” with various “sounds” and “samples” this CD jst pisses over all of them. Yeah, the ones about superheroes, Rolexes (both of them for good measure), Ringtones, Bentleys and Nightime sunglass wearing. Props to Revolver for having the bullbags to make such music and I hope to see much more of this in the future.
THE STATS
LYRICS: 8/10
PRODUCTIONS: 8/10
ORIGINALITY: 9/10
TOTAL: 25/30
MIC RATING: 5 OUT OF 5 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

An Interview With…J Beatz !!
Me: So..J Beatz..I’ll start with the present. Whats happening at the moment ?
J Beatz: Right now I am just on my daily grind making a beat a day, emailing tunes to DJ’s/MC’s and sorting out bits and bobs for my Podcast, called The Archive which is an instrumental mix by DJ Smallz and that will be available to get from the Grime Digital Podcast and will be out in a few weeks time. Also catch me on Brutality’s Boooooom Vol. 4 Free Download instrumental mixtape.
Me: For the people who might not be 100 % percent on who you are, what would you say ?
JB: I’m J Beatz a Grime producer from North London on the come up and I aim to be well known and established within the UK.
Me: I think your getting there. Do you think producers are getting the credit they deserve ?
JB: I think so because if you look at the amount of Grime releases coming out at the moment its mainly instrumental CD’s (which i think is well overdue) by Producers like Terror Danjah, DOK, Nocturnal, with more instrumental releases coming out by Silencer, Rude Kid, Maniac it can only be positive for the producers seeing as the vinyl is basically dead we now have an avenue in which we can release our music.
Me: I see I see. You produced the Risky Roadz anthem lately, how did that come about ?
JB: Well Rsky asked me for a beat for the Risky Roadz Album and I e-mailed him 3 beats and he chose the Instrumental “Prepare For Liftoff”. He got Tuggzy Tantrum, Jungle & Spydaman to jump on it and that’s how the tune come about.
Me: And of course, I can’t leave un-mentioned, the T Shirts !! Hows that going for you ?
JB: It’s good man. When I first released them in Uptown Records I never knew they’d be 1 or 2 in the t-shirt charts knocking off Tinie Tempah, Wiley and Jammer, nor get an interview/competition in RWD Mag.
Me: That was a result then. So you mentioned you aimed to be known around the UK, what else would you like to achieve throughout the year ?
JB: I just wanna get my music heard, have all the top DJ’s playing my tunes and bring my Behave Yourself (Flamzy, Evolver, Rampage, Untitled & Messy) fam with me.
Me: Yeah you guys are doing a lot. What plans you guys got together ?
JB: Right now the plan for Behave Yourself is to drop a free download promo/CD giveaway and then release the mixtape which will be available in all good record stores.
Me: Looking forward to that ! How does it feel when you hear your tunes being played by the top DJ’s around ?
JB: It’s a good feeling man because they could of easily pared me & ignored my music but they didn’t and instead they played my tunes so big up all the DJ’s supporting me right now.
Me: Obviously, people have there own styles and influences, but what producers do you think are really shining at the moment ?
JB: Do youu mean up and coming or in general?
Me: Lets say if everyone was in one boat.
JB:Right now, the producer which is doing a lot is Nocturnal he released the best instrumental CD by far, also Royal T is getting banged out on the radio non stop, which is good for someone in his position, Moony ‘cos he is very versatile he can make a greezy tune and can make banging club track too and Z Dot he is just pure greeze!!!
Me: That’s a very honest selection. When it comes to MC’s, is there one MC in particular where you think, wow, I really wanna wrok with that guy, he’s a lot ?
JB: It would have to be Wretch 32; this guy released one of the best albums of ‘08 and lyrically he’s a beast, no one in the UK is close to him lyrically. So I’m gonna make him a beat real soon and I’m gonna email it and I’ll see what he’s saying.
Me: Yeah the album blew me away. Well, best of luck to you sir. Any shout-outs before we end ?
JB: Big up my Behave Yourself click, Frankstah for the interview, Grime Forum, Royal T, Z Dot, Moony and alll the DJ’s supporting me!
