And few other musicalings

That’s What I Call Music #1: DaVinche

“That’s What I Call Music”. That’s the name for the blog’s latest concept. Each week I’m going to choose an Artist/Producer/DJ etc from the UK music scene and tell you why I think they’re the people that make our scene what it is. Seemingly pointless you may feel this is, but this is the UK and our musicians DO NOT get the recognition they well and truly deserve.

So this week I’m going to choose someone who I owe somewhat of a more personal homage. 23 year old, South London producer DaVinche. At the extremely young age of 16 Davinche had managed to set up his very own recordings label, known as Paperchase Recordings. Since the birth of Paperchase, more than 14 commercially available EP’s have been released featuring some of the UK underground’s biggest names including Jammer, Essentials, Kele Le Roc, Katie Pearl & Kano. He boasts abilities to play instruments like the Piano and the Guitar and although I’m yet to witness it myself, I’ve heard he’s impressive with the old “Vocal Chords”. His mission has always been to “widen Grime’s audience” and with each day that passes he gets ever closer to that target, prodcuing music for globally recognised artists like Estelle & M.I.A.

The personal homage comes down to my time during secondary school. I was a keen listener of music who followed all genres, but much like the present day my main focus was the Grime scene. The tracks which were floating about the most and inevitably my favourites were produced by the man in thought; Davinche. In 2006 it would’ve been fair for you to say that I didn’t know all to much about music or indeed what I was listening to. But an older friend of mine introduced me to the joys of Radio (Of course I knew what it was) and after listening rather sleepily to the Logan Sama show on Kiss 100 one rainy night, there was a tune that particularly that stuck out for me. Katie Pearl feat. Snipe Keedo – The Buisness (Prod. By Davinche). I only ever had this song as a low quality rip but make no mistake, this song challenged the thickness of my bedroom walls week-in week-out. Since then, whenever I heard the name “Davinche” I was instantly content to listen up. Tune after tune followed, Tinie Tempah – South Of The River, Snipekeedo – Sometimes, Kano – P’s & Q’s Tinchy Stryder – Something About Your Smile were just some of the many songs that helped me through mounts of overdue coursework and shoddy Powerpoint presentations. Not even aware at the time, but during the 2007 NFL season on Sky Sports the score used on the advertisements was composed by Davinche as well !!

Dirty Canvas – The Legacy was Davinche’s 1st CD release, a compilation of his finest instrumentals to date and is perhaps only slightly bettered to date by Nocturnal – Nocstrumentals. His next CD release comes in the form of Rider, a CD that runs off of just one instrumental by the same name featuring versions from some of Grime’s finest MC’s such as Little Dee, Big Rem, Skepta, Wretch 32 & Bashy to name a few. The main version (w/ Keedo, Steelo, Ghetts & JME) will be included in the stars debeut album Open Minded and is set to drop this very year. So the next time you hear/see the name Davinche and you go to press skip, think twice, because it is sure to be something special.
