House Of Grime

And few other musicalings

“There’s No Need To Call Names…”

On a monday night, there would be nothing more I’d like to do than sit in the confinments of my bedroom, listening to Logan Sama’s Kiss FM show.

But in more recent weeks, that disease commonly known as Cream Crackered-ism (Tired, for those less cockney readers) has overcome that particular desire of mine, so I’m forced to piece together comments from the forum with youtube-d audio rips.

So after doing my Sherlock Homes act it was of great pleasure for me to stumble across this

Yep. That’s right. Indeed you saw and heard correctly, Little Dee teams up with the almighty musical forces of Wiley, Chipmunk, Maverick, Scorcher and Brazen (Yeah I know, Brazen, where did he go ??) !! The songs called Walk Da Walk, I dunno when or where you can get it, but my oh my what a banger !!

That’s my Logan Tune Of The Week (<LOL) . Last weeks tune was Wiley & Shifty Vs Ghetts & Devlin. Oh and stay tuned for a new Devlin post.

Peace ;)

Lee Brasco – Drastic Measures Vol.2 – Review

1st things 1st, I wanna apoligise to Brasco himself for taking extra-ordinarily long with this review. Now, all negativity aside let’s get on and review Brasco’s latest free promo: Drastic Measures Vol.2.

Volume 1 Of The Drastic Measures Saga

Volume 1 Of The 'Drastic Measures' Saga

Volume 1 of this series was actually quite good as well, ‘Shower Kids’ & ‘Garage DVD’s’ being the highlights there.

So what’s up with the latest installment you wonder ?

The proceedings start with ‘Maximum Profit’, a tune where Dirty Danger’s production is met halfway with Brasco’s rather catchy chorus, and a smooth flow. The 3rd verse is actually f’d ! Next up we have yet another version of Danny Weed’s popular ‘Activity Riddim’. Brasco’s is quite good, with a beat like this you have to find somewhere to impress and there are some stand out lines:

“I’m on N Dubz activity / better not waste my time /no / liberty “

“I got a girl but she’s nuttin like Billie Jean / I ain’t scared Mike Jack can’t thriller me

‘Not Like You’ is the obligatory catchy chorus tune. Simple tune really, Brasco done well, flow moves nicely. The promo’s going well, until we stumble onto ‘Sky’. An attempt to Rap from Brasco did not go down well, and the production really is annoying. ‘We Don’t Roll’ is one of my favorites. It’s a slightly more hard hitting tune than what we’re used to from Brasco, but this one is defiantly a banger. The flow smashes up the dirty production, with some hard lines in there.

‘Paranoid’ is on a complete different direction from the previous two tunes. Brasco holds up quite well on the beat, my friend described it as “one of them new grime sub-genres: Rhythm and Grime”. The tune is good, and so is the singer on the chorus. Continuing with different sounds we have ‘Extra’. It’s explosive beat sounds quite Rock influenced and it works wonderfully with Brasco’s flow.

Next up we’ve got ‘Rider Rally’, a version of Davinche’s popular ‘Rider’ beat. Brasco’s one is quite good, some funny and clever lines in there and the “Errgh” noises towards the end of the song prompted a frankly un-needed feud with South London MC M.I.K, who claimed the “Errgh” noise was his, all of which overshadowing a nice song.’Wanna Blow’ appears like another attempt to Rap but this time Brasco manages to pull it of. The production is good, and this tune is actually F’d up !

Wrapping up proceedings we have ‘This Way’ ft Dirty Dangerous. It’s a deep tune, the chorus backs that up, the production is slow and hard ! Dirty’s feature is good, but he doesn’t upstage Brasco, who holds up well.

So with all that wrapped up, what we have here is a great promo. Clever, catchy and original music all in one little promo !! I’m gonna go the whole 9 yards and say that this little project embarrasses certain released CD’s this year. Them important statistics:

Originality: 8/10

Lyrics: 8/10

Productions: 6/10

Overall: 22/30.

3 Out Of 5 Mic Ratings !! A good little project, let down slightly by some of the prodcutions, but for a FREE promo, fantastic !

Wiley – Race Against Time Review

Very late. Very much sorry. But this is it. That CD. The one I’ve been waiting for since December’s See Clear Now. Does it live up too the hype created by a wave of hardcore listeners and fan-boys ? (I mention them primarily because let’s face it the man himself has prepared no self-promotion) ! In my opinion…well…wait and see ;) .

This Mother Is A Baddd Jamm” is the sampled intro to “Headbanger”, the CD’s opening track. What a clever man Wiley is; providing one with a chorus to which I’ve memorized back to front and there are 25 references to the number 25 in the 1st verse. This is the statement that says “Wow, Wiley’s back and it’s alot”. Ballistiq Beats provides a beat which is ironically a head-banger, the guitar just wraps up a fantastic intro. With an intro like that you would think everything was destined to be sugar coated with rose petals and cherry’s. Unfortunately we get lumbered with “She’s Glowing”. A collaboration between 3 MC’s, who most would say are the best to come from this scene, is wasted on this auto-tune glossed affair. I’ll conceive that on a 1st listen you find yourself humming along but a little while later, you find yourself throwing up. All grime though eh Will ?

“Eyes Of The Lord” provides a somewhat calm but forceful message on Nathan Retro’s slow and simple but all the more effective beat. The relaxing mood of such beat is fish food compared to both of Danny Weed’s notorious freestyle beats. “Hummer Activity” & “Off The Radar” may come across as lazy for someone’s album, but they are simply the best of there kind. A combined time of 8 minutes worth of freestyle provide great listening especially over Danny Weed’s repetitive but catchy rhythms. On every CD I think “Hmm maybe there’s something I could play in front of a wide non grime-accepting audience. “The Olly” does certainly become that tune. Being a native Dubstep Producer/DJ, I was expecting something a little more intense and dark from Skream. But what he does produce is something scarily catchy, with MC Dream’s simple but most admittedly admirable verses and Wiley’s predictable neighborhood friendly chorus, come great listening.

But forget all what I’ve written so far. Because we now come to “I Was Like You”. This is it: GRIME. And Wiley does nothing less than absolutely murder Maniac’s “Saltfish” beat. He grabs the beat and strangles it. I could base my final outcome on this song. But I won’t because we still have a bit to go yet and how better to continue than with “Race Against Time”. “Industry Exposure” is where you’ll recognize this Maniac production. Wiley was doing a lot back then and the lyrical skill shown on this track echo’s that era. This is vintage Eskiboy, one of them tunes you’d surely recommend to someone after a good Wiley tune.

“I’m up in Man’s City like Shaun Wright Phillips”

“Too Many Man” is a Boy Better Know group effort in which for me, only Frisco manages to amaze. The tune has some strange knack to sound so brilliant and well put together on one day, yet sound so poor and annoying on another. But this track is a mere distraction. What we have now upon us is the Magnum Opus “Where’s My Brother”. For the 2 years in which I’ve had my 120GB iPod classic, never has there been a tune played as much as this one. Everything about this song is perfect; the witty lines, the chorus, the production, everything. Let down only slightly by a dodgy pressing error, this tune is one for the ages.

“Kicked Out The Game” furthermore emphasis’s why Wiley’s godfather label is no longer self proclaimed.

“I gave them more..the 21st century holds me responsible for grime kids that are going on raw”

“Bang” is one of the more upbeat tracks, and you can defiantly bop your head to it. The chorus is alot and I can’t help but feel it’s directed towards Skepta. Maybe a little to deep interpretation there… . “Zip It Up” gives us the unlikely collaboration of Wiley, Giggs and Trigga. 3 different genres on one track really. The slightly faster the normal delivery is sharp from Giggs, I actually prefer this to his usual “just talking” like flow. Wiley’s also rapping on this one and Trigger’s intense Drum ‘N’ Bass like delivery shows what Track 2’s collaboration should of sounded like.

If it wasn’t for the inclusion of “Where’s My Brother” then track of the CD award would more than certainly go to “Average Worker”. Another genius Maniac production, Wiley simply slaps anyone’s attempts to better him with this song. A dig included at Dot Rotten provides a serious sound before he starts talking about….Nick Cotton ?!?! Wow. A close contended for best tune.

The whole CD’s apparent greatness is almost ruined by the auto-tune on “Time Flies By”. Luckily the catchy lyrics and flow act as this CD’s Saviour…phew. And to top everything off “Music I Like”‘ is a laid back and quite frankly enjoyable song. It’s like you’re sitting here listening to do dust settle as Wizzy Wow’s beat just plays continuously at the end..and you think…wow.

So. The verdict ? Here you go

Get Rid Off: She’s Glowing, Too Many Man.

Skip To: Where’s My Brother, Average Worker, Music I Like.

Originality: 8/10

Lyrical Skill: 9/10

Productions: 8/10

Overall: 25/30

5 STARS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you’ve heard a better CD this year then….

A Chat With REC…

REC is one of London’s biggest emerging talents, and with his debut mixtape “Press Play” in stores, I felt it only right to grab a word.

Me: Your name is fairly new to some people, who are you and where are you from ?

REC: Well I go by the name of REC pronounced (arr-ee-cee) and I’m from pimlico in South London.

Me: OK OK and how long have you been doing music ?

REC: Well writing lyrics I’ve been doing that since I was 13 and I’m 19 now so that makes it 6 years however going studio and making tracks about 4 years now to be honest.

Me: Ok so your 1st in store CD “Press Play” is available what can we expect on there ?

REC: Yeah that’s available to buy right now in uptown records so support the grime scene people ! But yeah to be honest you can expect grime obviously I have other genres on there to cater for other listeners and to show my versatility. But it is predominantly grime and very good grime for any fan plus I got features like Double S, Twissman and more so that gives the CD a little more weight.

Me: Yeah I see. So if there’s different genre’s on the CD which of them was your favourite to make ?

REC: Erm I liked making bassline because the vibe from bassline beats always gets me hype so that was enjoyable. But grime is always my favourite genre to make because it’s what brought me into music properly and its a unique sound that brings a vibe just can’t be replicated.

Me: “It’s what brought me into music properly” so who were your influences ?

REC: No one can ever say that they were not influenced by Wiley because he is grime in itself so him and a couple other vets like Ghetts and Kano. But my personal influence has to be Scorcher, there was a point where I even started spitting like him, but yeah scorcher because he was different to a lot of MC’s because he could also deliver the goods on CD’s so that helped me develop a lot.

Me: And I’m correct to say your a producer as well yeah ?

REC: Yeah yeah some people may not know that still. I’ve been producing on and off for like 3 years now I just don’t really advertise my beats but you should be hearing more from me soon. I’ve got 3 beats on my CD as well so that should give an idea to people about my sound.

Me: “Allstar Recordingz UK” is that movement still going ?

REC: Yeah yeah well more an independent label, which consists of producers, artist and a sound engineer, such as myself, Clixx, Felon, Renegade, Kr Saviour and Rampage. And we’re just trying to do this properly with performances, releases, videos everything so watch out for us.

Me: Certainly. You’ve got a tune on the mixtape called “When I Was A Kid” with Double S. How did the collaboration come about ?

REC: Boy you know what I’m very fortunate that Double S knows a friend of mine so it kind of came through them and that at the time Double S was not too busy on any project of his own so I asked if he could jump on the tune and he didn’t mind so It’s matter of luck really and considering at the time musically I wasn’t really getting much luck in music I feel that it was deserved.

Me: I see. Do you think (without mentioning names) that too many MC’s are where they are because of who they know ?

REC: Yes and no. Yes because some just get very fortunate although being clearly lacking in lyrical talent but because they know a person who has access to avenues such as legal radio they get the exposure needed to progress. No because you can’t help where you live for example Bow E3 a lot MC’s from there get the exposure because that is the spiritual home of grime so its not there fault they live there is it so you have to look at it from both sides.

Me: So apart from Double S who else have you got lined up to work with? What’s the next step for your career ?

REC: You know what my boy Clixx I always work with him you know what from now people should just know that Clixx is no longer a friend but a sibling lol but back to the point I’m working with the likes of Nayta, Fantastik, Dribbla, Southstars and more of the younger generation who I think are going to takeover the scene differently. But my next step is to break into the grime scene, “Press Play” was a project for exposure.

Me: So that covers the MC’ing side of your careers, how do you plan to progress as a producer ?

REC: You know what producing for me is on the side really, I only produce when I want to and I don’t produce just grime either so, the exposure of my beats will probably only be heard on future releases of my own really.

Me: Ok I see. Do you find that as an up and comer it’s harder to get beats from the more established prodcuers ?

REC: Erm to be honest I haven’t really attempted to ask established producers for beats because as you will have noticed if you bought my CD I have up and coming producers on there and their beats are as good as some of the more established producers so why go to established producers when I’m not yet established and they won’t give ma a chance ?

Me: In a twisted way that’s quite a positive response ! Well thanks for talking to me pal, any shoutouts ? And where can people contact you ?

REC: Yeah a big shout to my brother Clixx, large up Drastic, Damage, D Dot, I Dot, Rampage, Renegade, Felon, Kr Saviour, Nayta, My tight friends from day and everyone supporting. You can socialise or contact me thorough http://www.irec.tk (Myspace), http://www.twitter.com/iREC, Vivien Rec Kongolo (Facebook) and recartist@hotmail.co.uk for collabs and anything else no waste people please it’s a waste of both our time and large up yourself mate !

Bashy – Catch Me If You Can Review

Hang tight Dionne in HMV for screw-facing me when I asked her to take a picture of me with the CD :S !!

Hang tight Dionne in HMV for screw-facing me when I asked her to take a picture of me with the CD :S !!

Well well well. June the 1st is among us. Admittedly, out of the 3 CD’s that were being released today, Wiley’s was the one I wanted to get 1st. But that’s not coming out until the 8th and I ain’t waiting around !!

Bashy’s name has been on the lips of millions of people, from Tim Westwood to Gordon Brown, all over England and even across Europe. Other than the um-matchable message he belted out on “Black Boys”, Bashy was the only artist to make a Grime hit the national charts in 2008 with “Kidulthood 2 Adulthood”.

The CD opens up with an epic message, various different people bigging up Bashy for all the work he’s done, creating history with “Black Boys” and inspiring thousands. “Before Before” is a genius piece of work, a celebration of all the things he grew up with including legendary Dizzee Rascal & D Double E Bars, classic TV Shows like Desmonds (Wow, that ain’t been on for AGES) and the real McCoy plus a remembrance of general life. The promise of “Who Want’s To Be A Millionaire” is let down slightly by Toddla T’s headache providing beat. “She’s A Gangster” gets more and more catchy with each play. The hook is just off this planet and Bashy does alot on the verses.

The 1st feature comes in the form of mega multi-platinum album selling group N Dubz on “Travel The World”. The song is quite good, Dappy’s hook is what really makes it though. Only a brave man would attempt to count the amount of Countries/Cities mentioned on this tune !!! Next up we got “Change”. This is probably the deepest tune I’ve heard in a while, Naughty Boy’s productions are actually sick ! Bashy must have cried on the page when writing on this one !!

“Copy Cat” can boast itself to be one of the CD’s best tunes. Bashy absolutly kills it !! I would love to see a video for this one. “OH MY GOSHH” - still floating about in my brain !! “Ransom” is cleverly constructed, it’s basically a script rolled into some rhymes, but it all sounds a little too “forced”. “Living My Dream” is another deep one, not as deep as “Change” but gets the meassge across all the same. Sirach Charles’ vocals on the chorus are smoooth ! “Life” is definatly not one of my favourite tunes. The vocals don’t really go with Toddla T’s yet again head hurting beat, although Bashy’s long going flow saves it a little bit along with the noice hook.

“Your Wish Is My Command” is actually a banger, I think Myx Quest’s beat is sampled form an 80’s tune, not 100% though. H-Boogie’s vocals on the chorus are absolutly superb and Bashy does well to saty ahead of his guest on this track !!! “We Can Do Anything” has been a favourite of mine for a very long time and this version feature UK pop-sensation Jamelia (Please, please do a video, just so I can see her :D ). The tune is emotional, yet, comes with a positive and happy vibe. “Sorry” didn’t realy get too much play . I’m like a lost little child after hearing this. Then switching on “Slags” and various other semi-degrading taunts towards Women. It’s a nice little tune noe the less, just very much not a legacy setter.

“What About Me” is quite deep. I’m sure I recognise the beat from somewhere but all the same, Bashy spills his thoughts all over it. “Day Before I Die” is one to be skipped to be honest. The chorus is frankly embaressing when you consider all the other bits we’ve seen on the album so far. Bashy does try hard to save it, but, I couldn;t get into it…

The bonus tracks. Well…”Kidulthood 2 Adulthood” made the UK’s top 100. Unreal. The Maniac production is pukka, the way Bashy keeps up with the beat is amazing and the fact this song charted is PHENOMENAL. “Black Boys” is that tune. The one you have on repeat. It’s gonna be around for years. And let me just add, as a white guy, the tune ain’t racist. Come off that talk !!!

This CD is not one to be slept on. Rating wise….tough one…it’s gott be a 4/5 for me !

Peace ;)
