House Of Grime

And few other musicalings

Top 3 Selected….

Earlier on the year, the Grimefourm crew took part in a poll to decide who they thought should deserve the “Top 3 Selected” label. The results looked like this:

1. Ghetto

2.Wiley

3. Dot Rotten

At the time, that was an accurate top 3. But now the forum are ready to choose once more, here’s the options:

You can get involved, vote, debate and all sorts in the Official Thread. (You will need to sign up, you can do that HERE).

My choices look like this (in no order)

Devlin

The east london MC is tantalizing his fans at the moment as they wait for his debut album “Bud, Sweat and Beers” to land in stores. But in the anticipation for that album, we’ve been treated to two fantastic songs.

“London City” is a good song describing a typical night out in the fantastic city of London (self-explanatory really). The video is really good as well, featuring cameo’s from Ghetto & Lil’ Nasty. “Community Outcast” is an easily recognizable tune for long standing grime listeners, originally featured on Devlin’s “Tales From The Crypt” Release. The tune is set to be re-released, this time with an added verse narrating on more relevant issues to the current economic situation and a fresh new video.

Two singles don’t sound like strong credentials for a top 3 MC, but listeners of DJ Big Beatz show on Rinse FM (3 to 5 AM Thursday Mornings) will have heard more new material with fellow O.T crew pals Dogzilla and Deeperman, of whom had a CD out earlier this year. (Catch the review here).

P-Money

Well what can I say ? CD of the year (so far), Radio Set of the year (so far), the South London MC is doing loads for the scene. “Money Over Everyone” (Review) was a fantastic CD, filled with a variety if concepts and a variety of grime if you like.

His very 1st vinyl “What Did He Say” dropped earlier in the year, featuring two of P’s biggest anthems to date, “What Did He Say” & “Don’t Jump” along with their instrumentals and last Monday P proved why he’s one of the scene’s best at Kiss 100′ central London studios. Along with a host of other top MC’s he tore down the mic on Logan Sama’s show.

Wiley

Alas, the godfather of grime. Call me a “fanboy” (an internet term used to describe someone who shows support for a particular artist, whether having substantial reason too or not) or even accuse me of “jumping on the bandwagon” (more than 3 people liking an artist), but no one gets about like Wiley does. Take away Revolver’s “Grimes Son” and the aforementioned “Money Over Everyone” and Wiley would have the CD of the year title.

“Race Against Time” was full of bangers such as “Where’s My Brother” & “Average Worker”, and is a welcomed CD to anyones collection. His work on other people’s CD is good as well. Features on CD’s from Little Dee, Skepta, P-Money and DJ Magic still maintain Wiley’s place at the top, and with “The Illusive” set to drop later on this month (or this time next year), Wiley is definatly top 3 selected.

Make sure to cast your vote now !!!

Z Dot & Dolla Da Dustman Present ‘The Go Getterish E.P: Preview’ !! (Featuring Mini-Interview)

Big up top boy producer Z Dot (one of House Of Grimes very 1st affiliates), he’s teamed up with North London MC Dolla Da Dustman to bring you a preview of their joint venture: The Go Getterish EP !! Read on below the cover to hear what Z Dot had to say on proceedings.

Me: How did you and Dolla 1st come to work together ?

Z Dot: It came about through Brutality, when Gritty Committee and Doller made a track ‘Hard As Nails’ on one of my productions, and it went from there..

Me: Ok, how did the idea of an EP crop up ? Was it a mutual idea or did someone suggest it ?

Z Dot: Before we decided to release the E.P we had already made a lot of tracks, so we thought it would make sense to release a product. It was a mutual decision to release it as an E.P.

Me: Ahh I see. So when and where will the actual EP be available to the listeners ?

Z Dot: The E.P has been finished for quite a while, we’re just waiting to shoot some videos before we release it, but that should be happening soon. The E.P will be available digitally via iTunes, Amazon and all the other online stores.. and possibly some physical copies will be made available to purchase.

Me: I’ll be speaking to both you and Doller soon in more detail but for now, what’s next for you as a producer ?

Z Dot: After The ‘Go Getterish E.P’ is released, I’ve got a 4 Track Instrumental E.P coming out ‘Fire Power E.P’, and productions across a number of mixtapes and albums !!

My Box Fresh Presents Come Grime With Me & A Fresh New Site..

If I’m not watching football or re-runs of BBC’s classic sitcom Only Fools and Horses, then Channel 4’s Come Dine With Me is certainly an alternative. The shows interesting and funny (reference to moments like the time one host permitted her guests to look around and they came across a rather large dildo in her bedside cabinet), so when DJ Manara offered to cook for Boxfresh at there photo shoot in Peckham, Come GRIME with me was created. If you’re wondering who the other people in the video are, we have the fresh prince of Funky Donaeo, Warrior Queen and L-Vis 1990. Listen out for the murkle-man himself Jammer on the commentary.

Also make sure to check out Boxfresh’s brand spanking new site, with interesting articles on the latest street fashion, Music, plus loads more from some of the UK’s best musicians in the form of Faith SFX & Jammer, and writers such as Hattie Collins. Check it out

“Don’t Phone Them Just ‘Cos You Got There Numbers”

Don’t bother phoning them just ‘cos you got there numbers, and don’t ask what they’re on either. In late 2008 during one of Logan Sama’s weekly shows on Kiss FM, we heard the two Plaistow-based MC’s spitting (rather aggressively might I add) over a nocturnal beat, “Don’t Phone Me”.

The song has been a success since, and even possibly more pain stakingly then England’s current heatwave, it hasn’t be released.

But now we have the remix. Same production, however, two different MC’s.

Lil Nasty Feat. Fumin’ – Don’t Phone Me (Official Remix)

Haven’t really heard from Little Nasty since last years “Hungry Season” mixtape. It’s nice to see him doing things like this and the inclusion of seemingly vanished MC Fumin’ really brings the track together. Fumin’ needs to be working with these guys a bit more, his input on Desperado’s “Gryhme Bangers” was good listening material and hopefully both him and the Nasty Bro’s will have something to release soon.

On second thought, what the hell happened to Griminalways ?!?! Peace. ;) .

Tune Of The Day

Devlin – London City – Bud, Sweat and Beers

This has gotta be the best tune I’ve heard in ages. I mean ages. Out to Kraze on the production, watch out for the official video coming within the next week or so. Also nice to finally hear something from the album I’ve been expecting since last year, “Bud, Sweat and Beers”. Set to be one of this year’s best releases…surely…

P.S loving that album’s title !! (A play on the popular phrase “Blood, Sweat and Tears” for those unaware).Peace !

Kid Bookie Interview

After recently dropping his free promo, I caught up with South London MC Kid Bookie, to check out his views on the scene, the South Soldiers situation and what the young up and comer has got in store for us next !

Me: So Kid Bookie…give us a little bit about yourself..

Kid Bookie: I’m just an MC from South London, Greenwich sides, looking to be a respectable member of the scene really.

Me: I see. A lot of people said they wasn’t feeling you after your appearance on Westwood, but opinions certainly changed when you dropped your promo “In The Making”, how does it feel knowing you’ve swayed people’s perspective ?

KB: It’s good and feels healthy to know when I put in the work it gets noticed. But its a downer on some sides as I first like got heard on Westwood’s show last year September with hood stars Dot Rotten and Voltage, and didn’t show my ability, people will remember and try not to give me a second chance, so I have a lot of potential fans to persuade really.

Me: Do you feel the listeners are all to ready to jump on mistakes then or is it there right?

KB: It goes down to who your most familiar with, people like to hear familiar voices, so when a new voice comes in its hard to really capture the audience as they feel more in tune to artists they already know. If you heard me from last year times and locked off from listening to me since then you won’t see the improvements, but if you have recently got into me I guess its easier to change opinions as I’m in the process of mastering my flow and writing in general which always makes me improve gaining more of a fan base.

Me: Ok I heard that. So now you’ve dropped your promo what can we expect next ?

KB: Well to be honest, it was slightly half hearted with old tunes and new material, but my next project is a little EP called ”Aftershock” featuring local MC’s from my part of south like P Money, Jendor, Little D, Dot Rotten, Desperado and then out of the ends MC’s like Lee Brasco, Scru face and more. I’m putting in a lot of time and effort as I’m getting a lot of positive comments on the Myspace, youtube videos of me and fans on the MSN, so its giving me a better push. Obviously I still have the potential listeners so hopefully this new project can open a lot of ears for me and more support in the music.

Me: Well it’s nice to see you working with McCs off your own ends, did the locals provide your inspiration for MC’ing or did you find it elsewhere ?

KB: Definitely locals, spitting is still fairly new to me, started 2007 around march times, always listened to it before though, had P Money, Desperado, Gully Rainjah on repeat during school times, as they were local it was fairly easy to see them. Once I started I did one of my first tunes with P Money, and then met up with Firmer Dee did a few tunes and then met up with Desperado, he was a big part for me as he definitely was a strong influence to me, he recruited me to South Soldiers and I became more aware of the scene giving me an insight to more MC’s which I gained more knowledge about, Dot Rotten as well was an inspiration, definitely pushed me a lot in my music, a lot of love for that.

Me: As people may or may not no, you’re no longer with South Soldiers, what happened there ?

KB: Umm .. haha, well it came down to I think, getting to complacent within the group .. I stopped really putting effort in and sitting back, and despa and the rest were always working pushing the group, I was just generally being a wasteman sitting under your local lamppost bunning a joint, so he basically had a deep talk with me and decided what was best, was also going through a madness with the family, and shit just wern’t going good.

Me: Oh I understand, what’s your current view on the grime scene ?

KB: It’s strong and weak in some ways. Well in my opinion, strong for a lot of the top MC’s are all pushing each other getting a lot of there material around the whole of the UK but weak as in no one really wants to work with each other, that’s where I’m trying to break that, one tune on my CD called ”Bars & Flows”. I had the idea to just bring different ends together, with Double S from north, Voltage from East, Youf from south west, and Jendor and Mega from South East, unity is better and everyone working with everyone structures a scene and pushes it forward.

Me: Yes “Bars & Flows” has had some big feedback, was it complicated getting all them MC’s into the studio ?

KB: Na not really, I just basically rang them and said when your free go studio and record a 16 on the beat took around a few weeks or so as the line up changed so many times, Ice Kid was originally on it, Little D, Scru Face, Vertex, Dot haha it was a madness..

Me: Ahh I see I see. Bars & Flows was produced by Z Dot, is he one of your fav’s and do you have any producers where you think “oh if I work with them that’ll be sick ?

KB: I rate Z Dot he’s always had a bigger outlook for me, I’m glad to push him and yee, I want to work with Joker and Silencer, hard producers, but I do enjoy working with one up n comer called SickWun (VERY HARD), Skeamz and Dot Rotten as well are producers I enjoy working with and lacing there beats.

Me: Ok. What about MC-wise, anyone you’d like to collaborate with ?

KB: J2K, Manga, there’s quite a number .. hopefully I can get to them in the future.. I should be doing a few vocals of Wiley’s beats..but that guys to unreliable

Me: Well he is the self proclaimed godfather lol. Do you agree, who’s your top 3 ?

KB: Regardless of what anybody says you gotta respect the clown, Durtty Goodz, Crazy Titch and probably my brother dot, all hard artist’s.

Me: Ok well tanks for taking time out to speak to us, any shoutouts ?

KB: Yeee big up YOU fam , for supporting me, big up Scru Face, Despa, Dot Rotten, 12, Youf, Littles, Jendor, mega big up all the the DJ’s supporting me and boom, keep checking up on me cah i got new things to offer, safe brother.

So there you have it..
